Plasmetrec

One aspect of the Reverse Metallurgy project is to develop plasma furnace technology with a view to processing various secondary materials and waste to recover non-ferrous metals, some of which are considered critical for European industry. Hydrometallurgical processes will also be developed to maximise the value of the metals produced. The processes developed in the laboratory by the partners will be implemented on prototypes, in particular at Hydrométal’s Engis site in Belgium. The prototypes will aim to :

  • test the industrial implementation of processes developed as part of the research,
  • optimise the operation of the prototypes using the different materials tested, in order to identify as many materials as possible that could supply industrial units in the future.

The zinc units produced will be integrated into products using Silox’s expertise to maximise added value. As regards the recovery of critical metals, we are looking for new opportunities, particularly through collaborations.

Targets and results:

The new processes will contribute to the development of Hydrométal’s and Silox’s industrial activities. By recovering metals considered rare and critical, such as indium, germanium, cobalt, rare earths, etc., Hydrométal prevents them from being landfilled, thereby preserving natural resources. A pyrometallurgical facility would consolidate Hydrométal’s existing activity, which focuses on the chemical separation of metals (hydrometallurgy). The development of new metal concentration processes will enable Hydrométal to stand out from the competition by being able to recover critical metals present in low concentrations in secondary materials (waste and co-products). The research will enable the partners to develop their respective expertise in the treatment of complex materials containing non-ferrous metals.
